LESSONS IN HUMILITY.
As we all know the opposite of being humble, is being prideful.
Proverbs 16:18-19
Pride goes before destruction, And a haughty spirit before a fall.
Better to be of a humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.
When we see those who claim to know the Lord, lift themselves up and ask for applause, and that they have to remind people that sure was good preaching, that is a prideful statement.
Luke 18:11-14 (Jesus teaching)
The Pharisee stood and prayed thus for himself. "God I thank you that I am not like other men-extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as a tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all I possess.
"And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying "God, be merciful to me a sinner! (humble)
"I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
It was the humble heart that was justified.
When we humble ourselves in the Lord's presence, then He will lift us up.
We use to sing a song like that years go.
Titus 3:1-2
Remind them to be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, be ready for every good work, speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men.
Don't wait for God to humble you, be alert and humble yourself.
Know that you are nothing without Jesus.
Isaiah 57:15
For thus says the High and Lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:
I dwell in the high holy place, with him who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, And to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
Let God's word penetrate your heart. We are not to set our mind on high things, we are not to be wise in our own opinion.
Romans 12:16
Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion.
Humility is an important characteristic that we need to develop.
James 4:6-10
But He gives more grace, Therefore He says:
"God resist the proud, But gives grace to the humble.
Beloved, only God is to receive glory and honor.
Proverbs 22:4
By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life.
The fear of the Lord isn't that we should be afraid of the Lord, it is to remind us how great and powerful our God is. He is the almighty!
Do you want riches and honor, then be humble.
This reminds us that we are completely dependent on the Lord Jesus.
The precious Holy Spirit will remind us of this fact.
Humble people will put other's needs first. They are not thinking of their own needs.
A humble person is to be willing to sacrifice their own needs, in order to fulfill someone else's needs.
C.S. Lewis said "humility isn't thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less"
Others have said, that being humble is necessary for us to place God in our heart in His rightful place. High and lifted up.
A.W. Tozer and C.H. Spurgeon, all have said the same thing.
Humble yourself.
These brothers were humble ministers and through the ages God has used their teaching and is still using their teaching.
Beloved, guard your heart and mind with the word of God, and remember pride is always pointing a finger at the other guy.
They see themselves better than they are, In reality, they are set for destruction according to God's word!
2Timothy 2:24-26.
A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient, in humility correcting those who are in opposition,
if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.
Beloved, humble yourself, remember pride will cause you much pain, it will always point out what is wrong with someone else.
God bless your day
