SHOULD WE BE GIVING A TENTH OF OUR INCOME TO THE LORD?
There is a question that new believers ask. Should they give a tenth to the Lord, called the tithe? I say No!
No, that was a command in the old covenant to be done out of obligation and duty.
Malachi 3:8
Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me!
But you say, In what have we robbed You? "In tithes and offering.
In the old covenant you were cursed for doing this.
In the New covenant we are to give far above both tithe and offerings, not out of duty, or obligation, but from our heart.
The believer gives more than a tithe and offerings because it all belongs to the Lord.
Everything we have has come from our Lord.
2Corinthians 9:5-9
Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren to go ahead of time, and prepare your generous gift beforehand which you had previously promised, that it may be ready as a matter of generosity and not as a grudging obligation.
But this I say: He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.
So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.
And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.
As it is written: He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever.
Beloved, it is a joy to give to others in need.
It is about our new nature in Christ Jesus. God is a great giver, so should we be also.
Proverbs 21:25-26
The desire of the lazy man kills him, For his hands refuse to labor. For he covets greedily all day long.
But the righteous gives and does not spare.
If the tithe becomes a duty that you perform to mark off of your list of things to do, you might as well have not given at all.
If offerings are not given cheerfully, it is not given out of a heart of love.
Proverbs 22:9
He who has a generous eye will be blessed, For he gives of his bread to the poor.
Do you want to be blessed? God's word tells you how.
By being a great giver, not only of your money and substance, but of all you have.
Do you have things you no longer use? give it to someone who can use it.
Beloved, Give with a cheerful heart, you can never out give God, He is watching to see if your heart is transformed by His love.
John 3:16-17
"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
Beloved, God gives to the righteous. Who are the righteous?
They are those who are in Christ Jesus. We have the Lord's righteousness.
We should be like our Lord in every aspect.
He was a great giver and so should we be.
Take a moment and ask yourself, what do I feel when giving offerings to the Lord?
Is it a joy, or something to check off my list as done? Good question.
Give it some thought and prayer.
God bless your day
