What is true repentance, is it remorse, or regret, or change of mind and actions?
We can feel sorry for things we have said and done, but that is not repentance.
True repentance is a change of mind and heart, and actions.
We know we have said or done something wrong and we ask the Holy Spirit to help us change. We are truly sorry and do not want to return to that sin again.
Repentance, true repentance will not only have a change of mind, but a turning to a new direction in our life.
We don't want to go back to that sin. Even though we know Jesus forgives us as soon as we recognize what we have said or done as sin, (missed the mark) We still must cooperate with the Holy Spirit, God through the Holy Spirit takes the want to out of sin.
Regret is connected to self-pity. We can have remorse, and not change, only to return to the same sin again.
The enemy entices us to return to the same sin so he can keep us in guilt and shame, this weakens your faith walk and so he keeps you at a low point. Feeling self-pity and regret. Feeling bad about yourself.
Matthew 4:17
From that time Jesus began to preach and to say, "Repent" for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Peter after the Holy Spirit's boldness came upon him, after he was baptized in the Holy Spirit in the upper room, said Repent to the crowd!
Acts 2:36-38
"Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ."
Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what must we do?"
Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. "For the promise is to you and your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.
Beloved, you can feel remorse for something, but that is just emotion, you can express sorrow over a sin, but that does not change you, you take the action of true repentance by asking the Holy Spirit to change that desire or thought. You turn 180 degrees from that sin and go toward God and away from the enemies temptation.
Jesus paid for all our sin, but if we choose to keep returning to it, we have not truly repented. He tells us to repent, change your mind and actions will follow.
Fill your mind with the word of God and transformation will take place and when that sinful thought comes, say no! I am free by the blood of Jesus, I do not have to obey my flesh or the enemy any longer. It is your choice.
Jesus carried all our shame and guilt, we are not to carry that after we have been born of the Holy Spirit. That is where we have the power to say No! to sin.
So don't go by your emotions and just be sorry, but go by what God's word has to say, and that is to submit to one another and confess to one another that you may be healed.
James 5:16
Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.
We confess to one another because we are all in this together and we need each other.
Jesus lives in us, so as we confess to one another, we are becoming stronger, unashamed, and not allowing the enemy to place guilt on us.
We have a new born again spirit, but this old flesh is the trouble maker.
When our mind is under attack, we have each other to agree in prayer with us, that stops the enemy in his tracks.
